Mount Vernon Swing Band

**REHEARSALS RESTARTING ON MARCH 21, 2022**

The Mount Vernon Swing Band is an eighteen-piece swing band/dance band/jazz ensemble with vocalist. The band has been entertaining audiences all over Northern Virginia and the Washington metropolitan area for 35 years. The band was founded in 1984 by Frank Worden and was led by Owen Hammett for many years. Mr. John Howell currently directs the band. The band has a performance library of several hundred charts and has a tradition of supporting charitable and nonprofit organizations. The band routinely performs at retirement homes, senior centers, fraternal and civic functions, neighborhood concerts, apartment complexes, anniversary celebrations, wedding receptions, and the like.

As a “big band,” the Mount Vernon Swing Band has a full saxophone ensemble of two alto saxes, two tenor saxes, and a baritone sax; four trumpets; four trombones; and a rhythm section comprised of a piano, drums, bass, and guitar. Jane Brewster, the band’s long-time vocalist, adds polished vocal stylings to the band’s repertoire.

The Mount Vernon Swing Band is recruiting new members!

If you play saxophone, trumpet, trombone, or bass guitar, we’re interested in talking to you! Our eighteen-piece swing band/dance band/jazz ensemble with vocalist performs for fun all over the D.C. area. We rehearse on Monday nights at Mount Vernon High School. The band has been in existence for 40 years and has a performance library of several hundred charts. Sight-reading ability is critical, and a desire to improvise is preferred.
